Things People Who Love Cooking Fert Relate To

"A good cook is like a sorceress who dispenses happiness."
― Elsa Schiaparelli
Food is indeed one of the best creations of God, and the second best? All the awesome cooks in this world! And by this, we mean all the people who simply love cooking, even chefs at a restaurant. Cooking is fun, especially when the people in your life love to eat. So, if you have a friend or a family member who simply loves to cook, hold on to them for life! You'll never go hungry, because they'll always have something to prepare, even with 2-3 ingredients. Bring it on, baby!

One of the best things about cooking is that it is creative. You can be highly creative while trying out different dishes and recipes, because you never know, you might just invent an amazing dish! If you too happen to be one of those who is very fond of cooking, then you'll definitely relate to the list 19 things below. Check 'em out!

Things You Can Relate To If You Love Cooking

#1. You're the official cook in your family
small girl as chef
You're basically the cook whenever you're at home. Everyone in your family has their own demands and are always trying to get you to cook something really delicious for them. Always.

#2. It makes you feel like a rockstar
People who love food also love the reason behind the good food―you! Cooking something awesome always makes you feel like a rockstar or some kind of superwoman or superman. This works well especially with those who are having a bad day. You surely know how to bring a smile to their face!

#3. You end up cooking at most of the get-togethers
friends cooking
Whenever there's a get-together, and even if it's not at your place, you still end up cooking anyway. It's like some magnet pulls you automatically to the kitchen. Another reason is that you just love your cooking, and most of all, you don't trust other people with it! (smirk)

#4. You instantly connect with people who love to cook
There are many, many people in this world who also love to cook. There's so much to talk about when it comes to cooking! You can talk about recipes, appliances, ingredients, spices, etc. It is also a perfect conversation starter if you are getting bored at a party. I'm sure you'll bump into someone who is fond of cooking or at least someone who loves to eat.

#5. Cooking is like a rejuvenating therapy for you
chef with flying veggies
Nothing makes you feel better than cooking and that intoxicating aroma of food. The only way to make your horrible day better is to go into the kitchen and cook something amazing or try out a new recipe. Like other people listen to music for uplifting their mood, you cook!

#6. You have immense patience, but only while cooking
Often times, you are labeled as an impatient person, but when it comes to preparing food, you become the most patient person on this planet. You can wait for hours and hours for the food to get prepared. You're also impatient with people who do not eat properly, but nothing else makes you happy than seeing someone eating and relishing even the last morsel of the food in the plate. And that's when you decide that you'll be the "cook and foodie" partners, forever! (So that you can try all your experiments on him/her)

#7. You automatically get attracted to the food and grocery section in a mall
girl grocery shopping
The moment you enter a mall, you find yourself walking towards the grocery and food section. Again, there seems to be some inexplicable force that pulls you towards it. You make sure that you are in control of the grocery shopping, simply because you get to decide what you want in your food. You know all types of spices and ingredients, and they have become an integral part of your life now. You have all kinds of ingredients and spices available in your kitchen.

#8. People often ask you about your secret recipe or ingredient
You are often asked about the secret ingredient that you used or the secret behind the wonderful dish that you prepared. What they don't know is that it is not any ingredient, but the love for food and cooking that makes it tasty. Just a drop of love, and it becomes amazingly delicious. Sshhh! It's a top secret!

#9. You always end up watching cooking shows on TV
girl watching cooking show
However much you decide to watch some other channel or catch up on some movie on TV, you always end up watching cooking shows and channels like Food Network. You love watching and learning new recipes and make it a point to note them all so that you can try them out later.

#10. You have at least one signature dish
And it's finger-licking awesome! You have this signature dish that nobody else can beat you at. Whoever wishes to have it, they know where to go. In fact, you're popular in your group for that particular dish, and people have even mentioned it while introducing you to someone new. And you're proud of it!

#11. You've burned or set something on fire at least once
girl in smoke
All of us have burned or set the fire alarm off at least once while trying to cook. And the fire alarm makes sure that it won't stop ringing for the next 10 minutes. And other times when you're not burning stuff, you've left them undercooked. Well, only to get it perfect the next time! After all, practice makes a man perfect, isn't it?

#12. You don't like anyone disturbing you while you're cooking
It is YOUR kitchen, and you don't like anyone poking their noses in between while cooking, especially the people who have a habit of commenting on everything that you add to your recipe. It is your territory and nobody is supposed to wander around near it. After all, who doesn't need their personal space in life!

#13. People have given you all sorts of gifts related to cooking
cooking accessories
Whatever occasion it may be, the only gifts that you get are related to cooking. Most of the time, it has been an apron, which you never wear! And other times, cake molds, cookware, pans, spatulas, hand gloves, chopper, peeler, grinder, etc. Thank you, people!

#14. You've bookmarked more recipes than you've ever made
More than half the time when you are surfing the Internet, you're looking for new recipes and food combinations, or new appliances. You make sure that you bookmark the recipe, regardless of whether you're going to try it out or not. The bookmarks list in your computer is filled with recipes, and is longer than the list of recipes you've tried out till now.

#15. You've pretended to be on a cooking show while cooking
small girl cutting
Admit it! We all do such stupid things when we are alone. You've dreamed of being on a cooking show in front of a large audience, calling out all the ingredients and method of preparing. The next Master Chef in making, are you?

#16. You've even stirred constantly for 30 minutes
Because it was written in the recipe! Remember the time when you started cooking and were just in the experimentation stage, and also that aching hand? Of course, how can you forget those times when you stood stirring the dish for 30-45 minutes continuously, simply because it was mentioned in the instructions! When you think of it now, you feel stupid for having it taken literally. And all they meant was to stir it constantly so that it doesn't get burned from the bottom, which you could've done in breaks, BTW!

#17. You've also had to deal with little criticism for your cooking
man criticizing girl
Although you love and appreciate compliments, you hate it when anyone criticizes your dish. Moreover, you also carry a bag of guilt around with yourself. You now understand why your mom used to get mad at you when you threw tantrums as a kid and didn't want to eat, because it was not nice, or did not like any particular vegetable or ingredient that was used in it. Oops! Sorry, Mommy.

#18. You like to keep the kitchen your way
You don't like it even if one spoon or spice is not at its place. You turn into a monster if your maid or anyone else re-shuffles the order of your cutlery. Even though it may look cluttered, you feel it is organized, simply because it is easier for you that way.

#19. When the recipe you tried is loved by everyone!
Happiness for you is... when you try a new recipe and everyone loves it! Everyone is always curious about what you're going to cook next. They love your cooking so much, that they self-invite themselves all the time. The best time of the day for you is when everyone loves and appreciates your cooking. What else do you need in life?

These were some things that you'll identify with if you too are fond of cooking. Isn't it fun? What's the best thing you like about cooking? Let us know in our comments section., Things People Who Love Cooking Can Relate To foodrecipeandhealth.blogspot.com farkıyla sizlerle.

5 Unhealthy Hotel Habits To Break Now

Many travelers believe their hotel rooms to be a safe space while abroad. For some, the hotel room becomes an immediate home away from home, giving travelers license to stretch out and relax as if they were in their own bedrooms. However, what they don't realize is danger always lurks right around the corner – even when in a seemingly secure location.

In a survey commissioned by The EasyLock, a British temporary door lock manufacturer, over half of the 2,000 surveyed knew someone who had an item stolen from their hotel room.

In the blink of an eye, those travelers lost valuable jewelry, electronics, or even travel documents without immediately realizing it.

In many situations, travelers can prevent becoming a victim before they are even targeted by thieves. By breaking these five unsafe hotel habits, international adventurers can make sure they come home with the items that matter most.

Leaving valuables in plain sight within the hotel room

Many hotel guest believe that their rooms are magically locked and sealed when the "Do Not Disturb" tag goes around the doorknob. However, even at the best hotels, the sign may not be a deterrent for a determined hotel staffer.

As one frequent traveler discovered, the maid isn't always just looking to clean up a room – they may be looking to clean out the traveler as well. Anytime you leave the room, be sure to pull any valuable items out of plain sight. Simply put: leaving valuables out can be an invitation for them to walk away, sometimes never to be seen again.

Not using the hotel room safe

Nearly every hotel room has an in-room safe provided as a courtesy.

The code on the in-room safe is reset with every guest, meaning no two codes are the same. When traveling, the safe can be utilized for everything from electronics and valuables, to a document contingency kit in case of emergency.

However, some travelers do not elect to keep items in the hotel safe. Of those surveyed, 44 percent said they did not use the safe to keep their items secured when out of the room. While no hotel safe is entirely impenetrable, the in-room safe is an easy first line of defense from hotel room theft.

Not using the swing-bar lock while in the hotel room

Many travelers consider the two room entry locks – the card entry and the bolt lock – to be secure enough to protect them while in the room. However, both measures may be defeated by a hotel staff member with a bolt key and master key card, potentially leaving your valuables at risk.

Many respondents in the survey said they either personally had something stolen or knew someone who an item stolen while they were in their hotel rooms! When it's time to retire for the night, be sure to use the swing-bar lock on the hotel room door. The swing-bar lock is a physical bar that prevents unauthorized entry into the room when the guest is in it.

Packing more items than the traveler truly needs

As travelers see the world with more and more gadgets, the overall value of their luggage increases. Of those surveyed, the average value of their luggage and contents came to over $4,800. This creates a virtual gold mine for a would-be thief.

When it comes to your luggage, be careful with the items you can't part ways with. Valuable jewelry and personal heirlooms should stay at home, while everything else should be locked in the hotel room safe when not in use.

Not purchasing travel insurance ahead of a trip

What many travelers don't know is that travel insurance can cover more than just trip cancellation and trip delay. A good travel insurance plan can help travelers in the worst of situations, including lost or stolen luggage.

No matter where an item is stolen, certain travel insurance plans may cover lost or stolen goods. Before leaving for a destination, consider purchasing a travel insurance policy to cover both the physical luggage and its contents.

Though no traveler is perfect, knowing which habits to avoid could keep modern adventures safe on the road. By breaking these five bad hotel habits, travelers can make sure their possessions stay secure, even when away.

A Tour of the Windows 10 Start Menu

The Windows 10 Start menu.
The Return

Without a doubt, the Windows 10 Start menu is the most talked-about, most-requested, and most delightful part of Microsoft's newest operating system. I've talked already about how happy it made me; its return was undoubtedly the cornerstone of Microsoft's plans for the Windows 10.

I've also showed you where it is within the larger Windows 10 User Interface (UI). This time I'll dig deeper into the Start menu, to give you an idea of how it's similar to the Windows 7 Start menu, and how it's different. Getting to it is easy; it's the little white Windows flag in the lower-left corner of the screen. Click or press it to bring up the Start menu.

The text menu.
Right-Click Menu

First, however, it's worth noticing that you can also right-click the Start button to bring up a text-based menu of options. They duplicate most of the functions of the graphical Start menu, but they also add a couple of new bits of functionality. Two that I want to point out are especially useful: Desktop, which is the bottom item, which will minimize all open windows and show your desktop; and Task Manager, which can shut down programs that are causing your computer to hang (both functions are available elsewhere, too, but they're also here.)

The Big Four

Next up is the most important part of the Start menu, the four items at the bottom:

File Explorer. This provides access to your hard drive, and includes recently-opened items, frequently used folders and Quick Access to important stuff. (Years ago I wrote a tutorial on developing a folder system for your PC. The information is still as relevant now as it was then, and the steps are the same.) Settings. This is roughly equivalent to the Control Panel in previous versions of Windows. It provides information on, and allows you to change, things like your background, updates, user access and other "plumbing" aspects of Windows 10. So from now on, think "Settings" instead of "Control Panel." Power. This is the same three settings as always: Sleep, Shut Down and Restart. They work the same as described in a previous article (except there's no Hibernate mode in Windows 10.) And yes, it's glorious that it's back here, easy to get to again (a big failing of Windows 8). All apps. Click this to see all the applications on your computer, listed alphabetically. It's similar to how it worked in Windows 8.
Most Used

Above the "Big Four" is the "Most used" list. This consists of -- you guessed it -- the items you use most often, placed there for quick access. One cool thing about it is that the items are context-sensitive. That means, for example, that for Microsoft Word 2013 in my case, clicking the arrow at right brings up a list of my recent documents. Doing the same with the Chrome (web browser) icon brings up a list of my most-visited web sites. Not everything will have a sub-menu like that, as you can see with the Snipping Tool.

Microsoft also puts "helpful" items at the bottom of this list, like "Get Started" tutorials, or programs (Skype, in this case) that it thinks you should install.

Live Tiles

To the right of the Start menu is the Live Tiles section. These are similar to the Live Tiles in Windows 8: shortcuts to programs that have the advantage of automatically updating themselves. The main difference between the Tiles in Windows 10 is that they can't be moved off of the Start menu. This is a good thing, as they won't cover and clutter your screen -- another major annoyance of Windows 8.

They can be moved around in that section of the menu, resized, have the live updating turned off, and Pinned to the Taskbar, just like in Windows 8. But in Windows 10, they know their place and stay there.

Resizing the Start Menu The Start menu has a few options to resize it. It can be made taller or shorter by hovering a mouse over the top edge and using the arrow that appears. It doesn't (at least on my laptop) expand to the right; I don't know if this a bug in Windows 10 or not, because a multi-sided arrow does appear, but dragging it does nothing. I'll update this article if the resizing issue changes. There is one other resizing option, but I don't like it for anything but a touchscreen-only device. If you go to Settings/Personalization/Start and then press the button for "Use Start full screen," the Start menu will cover the entire display. In that case, it's similar to the way Windows 8 worked, and most of us don't want to go back to that.

Observe Your Exercises With Apple Watch

Apple

The Workout app on the Apple Watch can be a useful tool in meeting your own personal fitness goals, and users report that it and the Watch's Activity app are helping them get healthier. The app has the ability to track your exercise while engaging in a number of different activities, including outdoor walking and running, and indoor gym activities such as using the elliptical machine, rower, or stair stepper.

The Watch can also track walking and running indoors as well as both outdoor and stationary cycling.

Using the Apple Watch to track your workout can not only give you a good idea of how that particular workout is going, but also give you a good  idea of how your fitness is improving over time and what goals you should set for yourself in the future.

Depending on type of workout you ’ve selected, you ’ll be prompted to set a goal of either time, distance, or calorie burn. During your workout, where you are in reaction to that goal will be displayed on the screen, so you know how far you ’ve come and how far you have left to go. For some workouts you ’ll also get additional prompts mis workout. For instance, when you ’re walking or running with the app, the Watch will gently tap you on the wrist to let you know each time you ’ve traveled another mile. It will also let you know when you ’re halfway to your goal, and where you ’ve completed it. When you bike, you ’ll get that notification every 5 miles.

If you ’ve never used the Workout app on the Watch, getting started is fairly simple.

1. First you ’ll want to open the app. the Workout app is represented by a green circle with a running man on it.

2. Select your desired workout from the available list. Tap o it to select it.

3. Swipe left or right to select what you would like to try and achieve from your workout. You can select between calorie burn, distance, or time. If you ’ve done a particle workout before, then the app will display your previous stats. For instance, if you ’ve already done an outdoor walk, then the app will show you what you did on your last walk as well as your all-time high, so you can set your goals appropriately.

4.  Once you ’ve set a goal, tap the Start button to begin your workout. The Watch will display a 3 second countdown before it starts tracking your movement specific to the workout.

During a Workout, the Apple Watch will constantly track your heart rate. That ’s great for a short jog around the block, but if you ’re planning on undertaking a long afternoon bike ride or a longer workout then you might want to turn on the power saving mode on the watch. Everything else will work as normal, but the heart rate sensor will be turned off. Since the heart rate sensor uses a tremendous amount of battery power to operate, that means your Apple Watch will last a lot longer and won ’t run out of juice mid run.

You can activate Power Saving mode by going into the Glances menu on your watch and pressing the “Power Reserve” button on the screen that displays your Watch ’s remaining battery power. Learn more about the Apple Watch's heart rate sensor and how it works here.

Take Enhancing Mobile with GNARBOX

GNARBOX is the latest solution for mobile video editors everywhere. The Kickstarter-funded GNARBOX is a small device that can let you view, back up, edit and share your footage from wherever you happen to be.

Unlike other mobile editing solutions, GNARBOX embraces devices such as Phantom drones, GoPros, DSLRs, and pretty much any other camera that can connect via USB 3.0 or using an SD or Micro SD card.

It can connect wirelessly to up to 4 iPhones (and soon iPads or Android phones too) via a GNARBOX Hotspot the device emits. The GNARBOX is unique in the world of apps and lightweight hardware peripherals. The GNARBOX manages all of the heavy lifting normally done by a computer as a result of highly specialized internals.

So is it a complicated tool to use? Nope. It's really simple, actually. Shoot some footage, add it to GNARBOX, connect a phone to the GNARBOX Hotspot, edit your video, and share it.

The robust GNARBOX can handle RAW and 4K footage from a variety of devices, thanks to the powerful processor located on board. The device doesn't have to run solitaire or help you make a spreadsheet, and so all of it's power is dedicated to dealing with your video files as necessary. It contains a quad core 2.2 GHz CPU, an 8 core 3D GPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 128GB of fast flash storage, two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, and a MicroSD slot.

For viewing, editing and sharing, GNARBOX works with an iPhone and an app from the App Store, which allows for viewing and editing of footage before sharing.

The footage files reside in the attractive and well laid out application, and can be organized by geolocation or simply when they were shot.

While the Kickstarter campaign is still underway as of this writing, the response this device has received has been overwhelming. Much like the DJI Phantom 3 Drone or the GoPro Hero4, the GNARBOX is gearing up to become a household name for professional and amateur videographers, appealing as much to the skiier with an action camera as the filmmaker with a helicopter and Hollywood film crew.

With nearly endless applications where mobile editing and footage offload are critical, it's no wonder that the video world is watching this device's upcoming release with great interest. This writer sees the top potential uses for the device as:

How would you use GNARBOX? There are so many application, but this writer loves the idea of bringing one along on a drone shoot. Taking a DJI Phantom 3 or a 3DR Solo out for a day of flying is lots of fun, but the battery isn't the only part of the equation to be prone to cutting a shoot short. Memory cards full of awesome skyward footage fill up in a hurry, and without a laptop, reviewing and posting footage is a stunt. Toss a GNARBOX in the drone's carrying case and it'll be possible to offload shoot footage, review it, and even edit and share it online. Speed ramp the aerial maneuvers with GNARBOX's awesome editing tools, snip out the take off and landing, and share a polished action video before the quadcopter's motors have cooled.

The first 100 GNARBOX units will arrive in the hands of beta testers this fall, but as of early 2016, the GNARBOX will be unleashed in the wild.

The Bottom Line

Aug 10 2015 - If you are anyone that wants to get an all-in-one system for graphics or video work, then the Apple iMac with 5K Retina Display is unrivaled in the marketplace. The display is just incredible especially given the price of the system. Overall performance is great and the system is as stylish and well-built as ever. It still has the minor flaws of the hard to access peripheral ports and no optical drive but for many those are small sacrifices.

Aug 10 2015 - Apple has been one of the big innovators in the all-in-one category thanks to their iMac series. The 27-inch model is considered their top of the line system offering a large screen in a very svelte profile that features a very luxurious aluminum clad exterior. Few systems can match it in terms of the production quality and design. Not to rest on that design alone though, Apple continues to innovate and this time it is in the display for the 5K Retina Display model that has been on the market for over a year.

Performance wise Apple has always done well thanks to their use of desktop class processors rather than relying on laptop class parts. For the entry level iMac with 5K Retina Display, Apple uses a Core i5 quad core processor. While this is not a Core i7 with its Hyper-Threading, it does provide it with solid performance that outperforms and of the Core i7 laptop class all-in-one's on the market. This is especially true for those demanding tasks like desktop video editing which is something many looking to use this system will probably be interesting in doing. The system comes with a standard 8GB of DDR3 memory but this is something that can be upgraded by the user unlike many of the other internals.

Storage for the system is pretty average when it comes to capacity. It uses a one terabyte hard drive that provides a decent amount of storage. It would be nice to see two terabytes like some of the competition but at least the system does use a 7200rpm desktop class drive that provides it with some decent performance. Those looking for even higher performance can always order one directly from Apple with the Fusion drive that adds a solid state drive for caching or a straight SSD version. One thing that is missing on pretty much every Apple system now is a DVD drive. This means that system cannot be used as a media center for playing or recording CD or DVD media. This requires an external drive. In terms of adding on storage, there are four USB 3.0 ports and two Thunderbolt 2 ports for use with high speed external storage. One downside here is that all the ports are on the back of the display which helps minimize cable clutter but makes it more difficult to access them.

Apple's 27-inch iMac's have always had impressive screens but the 5K Retina Display is just something that has to be seen to be believed. It features an incredible 5120x2880 native resolution that has four times the pixels of a 2560x1440 display used in the previous 27-inch and is even higher than 4K displays. It offers amazing color and brightness that rival any other 27-inch all-in-one on the market. In fact, if you want a similar display for a standard desktop you have to look at the Dell UltraSharp UP2715K display which costs more than the entire iMac. Unlike Windows based systems, Mac OS X does a great job of scaling text which means that things don't shrink to an unusable font size. The graphics for the system are handled by an AMD Radeon R9 M290 graphics processor to help accelerate various tasks. Be warned that this is not a super high end graphics processor so gaming at the maximum resolution is not something you would even consider. Instead it has to run at scaled down resolutions such as 2560x1440.

Pricing is almost unimaginable for the Apple iMac with 5K Retina Display. The $2000 starting price is less expensive than the similar stand alone 5K display by Dell that was already mentioned. There is essentially no comparable Windows based all-in-one on the market. About the only ones that could be considered even close are the ASUS ET2702IGHTH or the Dell XPS 27. Both have 27-inch displays with WQHD skills and use faster Core i7 desktop processors that provide faster overall speeds. Their displays don't even come close but Dell does feature a touchscreen for those wanting that feature. Both of the Windows systems offer a DVD drive that is missing from the Apple. ASUS's solution is several hundred dollars less while the Dell XPS is nearly identical in price.

Epson Allows You To "Fill 'er Up!"

Epson's new EcoTank printers, inexpensive ink for life.  Epson

Two of the most common complaints about inkjet printers, especially the smaller, less-expensive models (Epson ’s WorkForce WF-2660 All-in-One Printer comes to mind), is that they run out of ink too quickly and that replacement cartridges themselves cost too much, on a per-page basis. Well, Epson has invited us to put our money where our mouth is—with its new EcoTank ink system, announced today, August 4, 2015.

That printer makers make most of their profit from selling replacement cartridges is common knowledge. With EcoTank, Epson now offers customers a new way to buy ink, with the understanding that if you ’re willing to make a meaningful investment upfront on the initial price of the printer (and a substantial amount of ink), the company will provide you with plenty of ink at a very reasonable cost per page, or CPP.

What is EcoTank?

Before going into exactly what EcoTank is, I should make a couple of things clear. When I say that EcoTank is new, I mean that it ’s new to North America. Epson has been hawking it in Europe, the UK, Asia—just about every place else on the globe—since last year some time. Second, the EcoTank concept of putting deep ink wells on printers isn ’t new, by any means, but it is new to consumer-grade, small, and medium-size (SMBs).

That said, what Epson has done is taken some of its more popular Expression and WorkForce AIOs and tacked good-size ink wells on the sides. With EcoTank printers, instead of loading ink cartridges into the machine, depending on the model, you either fill the ink wells from bottles or replace big empty bags with full ones.

Again, the benefits are that you don ’t run out of ink often (if ever) and that by buying in bulk, you get a highly competitive per-page price.

The EcoTank pricing model

If you ’re one of those users that prints only a few pages a month, or perhaps even every other month, EcoTank is not economically beneficial. EcoTank benefits people who use their printers. Epson began by releasing five EcoTank models, ranging from entry-level Expression home-office models equivalent to the Expression Home XP-420 and WorkForce WF-2660, as well as a WorkForce Pro model much like the popular WF-4630.

The printers themselves sell for about three to four times the equivalent non-EcoTank machine. For example, the WorkForce ET-4550, which is an upgraded WF-2630, lists for $499.99, while the WF-2630 ’s MSRP is $129.99. The most interesting, the best deal, and by far the most expensive EcoTank model is the WorkForce Pro WF-R4640 EcoTank. It sells for $1,199 and comes with enough ink for 20,000 black-and-white pages and 20,000 color pages. Replacement ink, too, is quite reasonable, making the CPP for both monochrome and color well under 1 cent per page.

So go ahead, use that printer. Epson says that these packages represent “2 years ’ worth of ink.” That, of course, depends on how much you print.

Ecologically sound

Epson says that these ink bottles (and bags) are the equivalent to, depending on the printer, as many as 50 or more ink cartridges. Your trash contribution to the world should take a good hit, not to mention all the electronics and printheads built into the average ink tank—doing away with all those cartridges can ’t be anything but good, for everybody, unless, of course, you don ’t print much.

The end

Few journalists squawk louder than I do about high consumables costs. You know where I stand on this… If you ’re not an EcoTank candidate, have no fear, Epson is not doing away with its cartridge-based machines.

Watch here for reviews of the different EcoTank models as Epson makes them available. The printers themselves are due out in September, but I should have a review of at least one of them today, the day of the EcoTank announcement.

Turn Your iPad Into A Scanner

The days of needing a big, clunky scanner in your office are over.  The iPad can easily scan documents.  In fact, the apps on this list are far better than an old-fashioned scanner.  They can allow you to edit documents, fax documents, save documents to the cloud, and one of them will even read the document back to you.

The actual scanning of the document is accomplished using the back-facing camera on the iPad.  Each of these apps will cut the document out from the rest of the picture, so you'll just get the page you are wanting to scan, not the pen sitting right next to the document.   When taking the picture, the scanner app will show you the grid it will use to cut the document out of the picture.  This grid is editable, so if it doesn't quite get the whole document, you can resize it.

When scanning the document, it is important to wait until the words on the page come into focus.  The camera on the iPad will adjust automatically in order to make the text on the page readable.  For the best scans, wait until you can easily read the words.

How to Become the Boss of Your iPad

Readdle
1.  Scanner Pro

Easily the best of the bunch, Scanner Pro is the right combination of price and reliability.  The app is easy to use, scans great copies, and has the ability to fax documents for small in-app purchase.  Amazingly, the $2.99 price tag puts it at one of the least expensive scanner apps for a "pro" edition.  After scanning, you can choose to email the document or upload them to Dropbox, Evernote and other cloud services.  And if you have an iPhone, you scanned documents will automatically be synced among your devices.

2.  Prizmo

If you want all of the bells and whistles, you may want to go with Prizmo.  In addition to scanning documents and storing them through various cloud services, Prizmo can create editable documents out of your scans.  This can be a key feature if you want to capture the text of a document and make a few quick changes..  It also has text-to-speech abilities, so it can not only scan your documents, but also read them to you.

Price: $9.99 More »

3.  Scanbot

While Scanbot is the new guy on the block, it's packed with a lot of great features.  It's also an excellent choice for those who just want a basic scanner with the ability to save to cloud services without needing to pay for anything.  While the pro edition of Scanbot opens up the ability to edit documents, add signatures, add your own notes to a document or even lock them with a password, the free version will be enough for many users.

If all you need is to scan a document and save it to iCloud Drive or Dropbox, Scanbot is a great choice.  And one neat feature of Scanbot is that it does the scanning for you -- rather than wait until the text becomes clear and taking a picture of your document, Scanbot detects when the page is in focus and takes the photo automatically.

Price: Free with in-app pro edition for $4.99 More »

4.  Doc Scan HD

Doc Scan HD has the best interface of the bunch, which makes it extremely easy to pick up and start using.  The free features include both scanning and editing, so if you need to add a signature to documents, Doc Scan is a good choice.  You can choose to email the document or save it to your camera roll, but if you want to save it to a cloud service like Google Drive or Evernote, you will need to purchase the pro version.

The Right Way To Make A Greater Blog

Adding a blog to a website is easy and often accomplished through the use of a CMS (Content Management System). This software makes it simple for people to manage their blog ’s content and publish new articles as needed, but this is just the first step. Being able to use the blog and using it effectively are two very different things. Sadly, many blog initiatives fail because people underestimate the time and dedication that is needed to make them a success.

They also often fail to follow some basics steps to publishing a better blog. Let ’s take a look at 8 of those steps:

1. Focus on Your Area of Expertise

The best blogs have a clearly defined focus on what they are about.  The broader your topic area is, the harder it may be to find a dedicated audience. This may seem backwards, after all, if you go with a broad subject matter and cast a wide net, it likely seems like you will catch a wider audience. In practice, however, this rarely works out.

A blog that is overly broad comes across as unfocused and readers are unsure of what to expect. In contrast, a blog that is focused on one topic shows readers exactly what to expect and it encourages people who are interested in that topic to return to the blog again and again or to subscribe for regular updates.

2. Find Your Unique Angle

Multiple bloggers may cover the same subject matter, but each of those authors should have a unique voice and angle to the content they create. This unique angle is what many readers will use to determine which authors they favor and follow.

When I first began blogging about web design on my own site, I decided to use my personal life as the basis from which I would work. Stories about travel, raising my two kids, and my love of the holidays became fodder from which I would spin lessons relevant to website design. This unique approach to the subject matter is what set my articles apart from others on the topic and it helped me establish myself with a readership.

As you begin planning out your blog strategy, consider not only the subject you want to write about, but also think about what you can bring to the table that will set you apart and give your readers something that they will not find anywhere else.

3. Set A Realistic Schedule

For a blog to be successful, it needs to have content that is published on a regular basis. This means that you will need to set a regular schedule for when you will add new articles to the site – one that is realistic and which you can meet. Many people try to overdo it with their new blog and they attempt to publish at an unrealistic pace. This is a doomed to fail. Whether you decide to publish daily, weekly, or even monthly, you need to set a schedule that you can maintain so your readers will know when to expect new articles.

4. Give Yourself a Base to Work From

An established schedule is great, but the reality is that life is unpredictable and you will not always be able to keep to that schedule. This is why it is important to have a base of articles to work from before you begin publishing. If you start with a bank of 6 to 12 (the number that makes sense for you will depend on your publishing calendar) articles in reserve, and you continue to write new articles all the time, you will find that if something does creep up preventing you from publishing according to your normal schedule, you still have articles that you can use to keep yourself on track. This is very important, because once you fall off schedule, it can be brutally hard to get back to it.

5. Enlist Multiple Authors

You can make your life much easier by having a team of authors contributing to a blog. This spreads the workload out amongst multiple people so that no one person becomes overwhelmed. Multiple authors also bring a variety of ideas and voices to a blog, which can really add so much to the overall presentation of the content.

6. Be Aware of Current Events

It ’s great to publish general articles that are relevant to your topic, but you should also be mindful of current events and publish content related to those events as appropriate.  This can be a great way to keep your content relevant, and if a current event is really prominent in the public forum, having an article that discusses that event from your perspective can get you some new readership who may have not found you otherwise.

7. Add Visuals

Text content is important, but text alone can make for a somewhat bland online presentation. By adding images to your articles, you can liven them up and make the overall presentation of the blog more attractive.

Sometimes, these images may simply be a general graphic meant to advertise the article (similar to what is done here on the main page of the About.com web design section). Other times, the images may be critical to the content and the article may reference these graphics that help carry the content of the piece (like what you see in this article on CSS Grid Layout). Either way, visuals can be an important part of successful and attractive blog articles.

8. Keep At It

Blog success does not happen overnight. Many people give up on blogs because they do not see immediate results. This is a mistake. If you want a blog to be successful, you need to be consistent over a period of time. If the content is good, the readers will come, so you need to be in this for the long haul and be committed to keeping that blog going even if the initial traffic to the blog is lower than you had hoped for.

Home Windows 10 is Already Rockin' It

Neilson Barnard/Getty Images Entertainment

Today marks my two-week anniversary with Windows 10. As a Windows Insider, I also had access to the beta (pre-release) versions of Windows 10. I don't like to draw many firm conclusions about beta software, especially for something as complicated as an operating system. But now I've had the release version running for a fortnight, so it seemed like a good idea to go over some initial impressions of what I like and don't about Microsoft's latest and greatest operating system.

First, the install was a breeze -- once I was actually able to download the blasted thing. I got several failed attempts, and I couldn't figure out why. It was frustrating beyond belief -- then I read this article in Redmond magazine. Pay special attention to the part about the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, and then deleting the files in the "\Download" folder. Warning: Do not delete the folder itself -- just the files inside the folder. For me, this did the trick.

49 Minutes to Install

Once that was done, the download went as it should. Then Windows 10 installed itself. In total, the install took 49 minutes -- a record for me when it comes to upgrading to a new version of Windows. I've done many, many upgrades over the years, beginning with Windows 95, which I upgraded to Windows XP. I've upgraded on laptops and desktops alike, and done it for every single version of Windows, except Windows 8 (which I bought new with my current laptop.) It should be emphasized that I have a new-ish, very powerful laptop (as I've discussed before).

But I've also upgraded Windows on other machines that were very high-end for that time. And it's never been less than about 90 minutes to upgrade before.

So for me, Windows 10 took about half the time to install. And since then, it's run very, very smoothly. I haven't experienced crashes or freezes (the notorious blue screen of death, for example), and all my previous programs have worked perfectly. This is also the first time I've experienced such a seamless upgrade. Previously, there were always problems, often small, but sometimes big, after an upgrade. Having such a huge beta program, with millions of users, surely helped Microsoft iron out many of the kinks beforehand.

For Some, It's More Like 24 Hours

The other side of the coin is my kids' laptop, a much less-powerful computer than mine. It kept choking on the Windows 10 download, saying it was downloading the OS, but taking hours and hours and hours. I've heard about some cases where it takes up to 24 hours to download! If that's you, be patient; you'll get there eventually.

I'm already completely used to the new Start button/Start Menu. I've written about it several times already, and won't rehash that information here. Suffice it to say that it changes the way you think about Windows. It has the intuitive feel of the Windows 7 Start menu, but adds new features. It didn't take much time at all to get comfortable with it, and it won't take you much time, either.

I've been playing with all the cool gadgets here and there, including the Action Center, Taskbar, Live Tiles, system settings and so on (click here for a tour of the Windows 10 interface). I'll be helping you learn about all that in the future, but the summary is that most everything I've run across thus far works great, and although much of it replicates functionality from previous Windows versions, it's still easier to find stuff, and things are more logically laid out than any previous version of Windows.

The Edge of Disappointment

I have just one big disappointment so far, and it's Edge, the new Microsoft browser. I was excited to see it in the Windows 10 betas, but it never worked very well for me. And now that I've used it in the release version, I'm still not crazy about it. In fact, I rarely even open it; I still rely on Chrome as my default browser. Things like creating and organizing bookmarks, for example, aren't as easy. It may just be that I haven't used it enough; if my opinion changes, I'll let you know.

So that's a lot of praise and a little bit of complaining about Windows 10 after two weeks of heavy usage. If I were to rank my happiness with it to this point, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. I'll be interested to see if my rankings change over the coming months, as bugs get ironed out, and I dig more fully into things like Cortana. But so far, so very good.

We Tried It: 15 Utterly Strange Spa Products And Services

Sharon Lapkin/Moment/Getty Images

When people find out I write about beauty they assume the best perks of the job involve free products. It's simply not so. I'm not a product junkie, really. I am, however, a spa junkie.

I love it all. The fancy spas, the wacky treatments, the soaking in hot tubs, steaming in steam rooms and sweating in saunas. I particularly love a great massage. Most of my experiences have been thoroughly invigorating and enjoyable. Few were memorable, but I have had some wacky experiences I just had to share with my readers.

From 4-handed massage by blind people to watching others get fish pedicures while I sat in a beach chair and got a foot massage to a $100,000 shower, here are 15 of my most memorable spa experiences ever.

Korean Scrubs With Colleagues

When the photo editor at my job suggested I go to a spa with her and some other colleagues on their visit to New York, I said, "sure thing." I figured we'd lounge around in white robes whilst sipping hot tea. There would be hot tubs to plunge in and a sauna to sweat in. Native American flutes would be playing over the sound system. Under our luxurious robes we'd wear bathing suits.

Cue the scratching Native American flute record.

It turns out the Korean spa the photo editor booked us at, Juvenex in Koreatown, was known for its amazing body scrubs and these body scrubs happened while you and your colleagues who you barely know lay completely naked in a row on tables without any curtains between you. Imagine a fishery with 5-foot long whale carcasses laid out in a row on tables. Next to each table is a large matronly Korean woman in a white plastic apron holding a giant sponge. That was us. (The whales not the Korean women). White bellies and wet floors and all.

Cue the giggling.

The good news is that the scrub was indeed amazing and that photo editor and I have since become close friends. I have been back many times with my dearest of friends and once with my husband. I do recommend you keep your eyes closed if you go with colleagues you barely know. And try to enjoy the scrub in between your laughter.

The Time I Paid to Have My Eyeballs Read

There are wacky things you can pay for at the world's poshest spas. I paid something like $200 to have my iris studied at the gorgeous Six Senses Sanctuary Spa in Phuket, Thailand in 2011, which is sadly now closed. On my visit, I looked over the spa menu, saw something called "iridology" and thought, "Well THAT sounds interesting!"

Iridologists believe the iris holds many secrets to one's health -- things like the state of your liver's health and whether you have a gluten allergy or potential issues in your breasts or your brain. This is how it worked: my iris reader, a nice 30-something Australian woman who admitted she was a naturopath, not a licensed iridologist (if there is such a thing), photographed one of my eyes with a camera. The image was downloaded on a computer and blown up so the colors came alive. The naturopath then "read" my iris using a map she had that described what various spots and shadows meant.  I don't remember any of the secrets my iris gave up, but I remember just how surreal it was to pour over a giant picture of my eyeball and talk about it without laughing.

I wanted to ask if my iris could tell her if I would live to be at least 80 and if I would ever fall in love with a tall, handsome man in time to have children, but I didn't because she seemed to take her job seriously. And I was, after all, the one paying the big bucks here.

The bad news is I missed a couple great hours I could have spent snorkeling. The good news is that I wrote off the cost on that year's taxes and a couple years later I did meet a tall, handsome man in time to have children.

Blind People Massage in Cambodia

The tour books play them up, so of course I had to try out the blind people massage when I was traveling through Vietnam and Cambodia in 2009.

The massage I had cost about $10 with tip and was nice and relaxing. I seem to recall it was a 4-handed massage, which in a place like this means 2 blind people massaging me. The organization they worked for took care of them in return for their services. There was nothing fancy about the place, it was as bare bones as a massage parlor gets. I seem to recall a dirt courtyard with chickens and a room with several massage tables partitioned off with curtains. Street noise was the background music to my massage. I loved dozing off to the beep-beeps of the motorbikes that are everywhere in Southeast Asia.

Was it the cleanest place I've ever been for a massage? Heck no. Would I recommend it to other travelers in Southeast Asia? Absolutely. You get a good massage for very little money and you are supporting an organization that helps blind people. Love and love.

The $100,000 Shower in Bermuda

At Tucker's Point Spa in Bermuda, I had a shower in a $100,000 SilverTAG Shower. The shower itself was somewhat memorable for having spigots that shot water in all directions, but perhaps the most memorable thing about it was being able to say I took a shower in something that cost $100,000.

Read more about it in my review of the spa.

My Evening in a Mayan Sweat Lodge

On a trip to Mexico in 2009 I got to stay at one of the fanciest places on earth, Maroma Resort and Spa, a jewel of a place tucked along the ocean on the road to Tulum from Cancun, Mexico.

While at this resort, my dear friend N and I ate decadently, slept in luxurious beds with the ocean lulling us to sleep and sunbathed daily. On the first night, while lying on the king-sized beach bed (yes, there were such things) watching the moon rise over the Caribbean, I spotted three women in bikinis emerge from a hut. They ran across the sand and dove into the surf. They bobbed and dove in again and again, turning their faces toward the full moon. They emerged from the surf holding hands (holding hands!).

I felt as if I had just witnessed a ritualistic cleansing, which, it turns out I had. What I saw was the end result of an evening spent in a Mayan Sweat Lodge, also called the "Temazcal."

Of course I had to try it. In the Temazcal, the participants and I found animals in hot rocks and described them. We ate fruit. We rubbed fruit and Mayan clay over ourselves. We poured water over our heads. We made noises like babies (the hut is a womb, you see).

But did we emerge holding hands while emerging from the surf? Read all about it in my article, Should You Try the "Temazcal"?

The Steam Container

2011 was a good year for travel for me. Late that year, I spent almost a month in India and had a few occasions to get massages in both fancy and soooooo not fancy places.

One day in Southern India toward the end of my stay, my traveling companion and I happened upon a spa just off a dusty road that led to a beach on which cows roamed. This "spa" was really a room on the top floor of a ramshackle building with no glass in the windows and 70-year-old linoleum missing in half the places. After weeks of traveling on buses for hours over winding roads, we were desperate to relax.

My kindly masseuse, who I took to be middle-aged despite her giggly nature, pointed to a round container that looked like what I imagined the container they used to send the first dog into space looked like. Except one's head was meant to stick out of it.

"Steam?" she asked with a grin.

Always up for anything that might turn into an experience I could later talk about, I averted my eyes from the steam ship's faulty wiring, chirpily said, "OK!" and then folded my large Western self into the container while my masseuse and her colleagues stood by and watched and giggled. Their giggling led to my giggling and it was all very charming, girlish and non-spa-like.

As I endured the steam, my masseuse sat herself in a rickety chair across from my container ship and quizzed me in broken English about why I wasn't married yet. Turns out she was exactly my age (38) and a grandmother.

I don't remember the massage that came after, but I do remember the giggling continued throughout the visit. I suppose there's something very funny about an almost-40-year-old traveling the world on her own. Who knows?

Ayurvedic Treatments in Southern India

When in India, you simply have to get an ayurvedic treatment, even if you have the World's Oiliest Hair, the kind that should never have vats of oil poured over it.

I knew there would be oil. I just had no idea how many shampoos it would take to get the oil out. When I had an ayurvedic treatment in Kerala, India, what seemed like vats of warm oil were poured on my forehead and all over my hair. It took me 6 shampoos and an entire afternoon to get the oil out. When oil dries, it makes your hair feel like straw. You don't forget things like this.

The Wrap I Got That Made Me Realize I Hate Wraps

When I tried a wrap at Rancho La Puerta spa in Tecate, Mexico, I was so miserable, I felt on the verge of a panic attack. I did not like having my arms pinned to my side and swaddled cocoon-like in blankets like they do to newborns immediately after birth. Everything was itching and there was no way to move anything except my nose. Once I decided wraps would most certainly be outlawed by the Geneva Convention for being horrible instruments of torture, I called loudly for the therapist, who had left the room. She came, unwrapped my arms, and I was much happier.

I have since had one other wrap and that time I requested that my arms be left out. I still hated it.

The Couples Massage in NYC That Put My Husband to Sleep

For his birthday in 2013, I took my husband back to Juvenex (see the above scrub story) for the works. We got steamed, sauna-ed and scrubbed and the coup de grace was to be a 90-minute couples massage. The massage was hardly relaxing or romantic. Instead, it was somewhat entertaining because poor Nick, exhausted from a week of hard work and thoroughly tanked from an evening of wining, dining and spa-ing, promptly fell asleep on the massage table, snoring loudly and missing the entire thing.

Well, he didn't exactly miss everything, because the ladies and I kept erupting in giggles, waking him up. He rolled his eyes and immediately fell back to sleep and back to snoring. So much for romance!

A Foot Massage While Watching Fish Pedicures in Thailand

I love getting foot massages on Khaosan Road, the most famous street in Bangkok's tourist district. The last couple days of a vacation I took there in 2010, I went every day and every evening for a foot massage in the street. You literally sit in a comfortable chair on the street among 50 chairs with other people in them and a person comes to you with a bucket for soaking your feet. After washing your feet, they sit on a stool and massage your feet for up to an hour. All for something like $12. Divine. It was the perfect way to end a vacation where I walked a ton.

My massage spot was nicely situated within viewing of the street's famous fish pedicure place and I spent hours watching people pay to have the dead skin on their feet nibbled on by fish. I have tried a fish pedicure before and believe it to be a ridiculous, yet very humorous, tourist attraction. Unlike foot massages, fish pedicures are not relaxing. This is what I watched happen over and over again like comedy television: a tourist takes off her sandals, rolls up her pants legs and sits down on the chair that hovers above the fish tank while her friends who are too scared to try it watch, hands over mouths. The tourist dips a toe in, pulls it out quickly and giggles hysterically, which causes her friends to erupt in laughter. This happens a few more times as she dips her foot in a little bit more each time.

Even the tourists who were able to sit there with their feet totally submerged as the fish nibbled away were unable to endure it with a straight face.

I, however, watched this unfold again and again while having the world's best foot massage. Decadent.

The World's Lamest Body Scrub Ever

At the Great Jones Spa here in NYC I decided to try a scrub. I have always loved the scrubs I have had in Korean spas in both NYC and Seattle because they scrub so hard, you end up covered in balls of your dead skin. I always leave Korean spas with the softest, silkiest skin.

So I figured paying $140 for a scrub at a posh spa in NYC would even be better.

It wasn't.

It was somewhat lame. First I lay in a fancy bed and had water sprayed all over me. Then the woman came in and sort of rubbed me down with mitts. I have no idea if anything was exfoliated. In fact, I hardly remember the service except that it did not compare to my Korean ladies.

I should have saved my money and given myself a body scrub at home. See Top 11 Body Scrubs & Bath Salts.

Numerous Naked Massages in India

For a country in which the women cover themselves up in public and expect female tourists to, as well, I was surprised at how comfortable their massage therapists were with having their tourists lie there completely naked with no towel to cover them up during a massage. In fact, they expected it. The Lonely Planet guidebook really should add a line teaching us how to say, "Towel, please" in Hindi.

I had a few naked massages just like this. Apologies for the image that just popped up in your head.

Don't miss I Spa-Hopped Across the World & This is What I Learned.

That Time the Facialist in Vancouver Would Not Stop Talking

I love a good facial, but I don't love it when the facialist talks to me throughout the facial about the "rosehip" this and the special lavender oil that and what exactly she's doing to my face and neck. I don't give a hoot what you're putting on my face in order to sell it to me later, I just want to enjoy all the rubbing with that Native American flute music you put on as my only background noise, thank you very much.

This is what happened to me when I got a fancy facial in Vancouver, BC, back in the late 90s. I've never forgotten that particular facial because after it, I was presented with a long list of those rosehip and lavender products used on my face. I actually fell for it, spending about $150 on products that I STILL HAVE TO THIS DAY.

My Horrible, Awful, Almost Ended Up in the Hospital Pedicure in Austin, Texas

I am spoiled by the awesome mani/pedi places in New York City so I tend to be judgmental when I get pedicures elsewhere. The pedicures in NY are cheap because there are millions of women (and men) here who get them and competition breeds good business. If you do a bad job, those people will flock to the manicure place literally 4 doors down from you and you will be forced to close your doors. I believe there are more mani/pedi places in New York City than there are Starbucks in the entire world.

I grew up in Texas and spend a lot of time in Austin, which is one of my favorite American cities, and I'm sure my Austin friends will begrudge me for this, but I have to say the worst pedicures I've ever had were in Austin, Texas. I've had 4 of them and once I was actually cut by the woman so badly I could barely walk for a week. The other 3 times they just did a lame, not-very-thorough job. I'm convinced this is because there aren't many cheap pedicure places in Austin so there's not much competition forcing them to do a good job. That, or crunchy, athletic-oriented Austin isn't really a place where most women (and certainly not men) get pedicures. The city is known for its music, but not for its pampering of the ladies. Get thee to Houston or Dallas for that.

The Pseudo-Sexual Stomach Massage in Tulum, Mexico

There was nothing sexual about the massage my girlfriends and I got in Tulum, Mexico, except that it was kinda, somewhat, ok, very sexy. I'll leave it at that.

How One Can Detox Your Beauty Routine

Beauty Detox 101.  altrendo images/Stockbyte/GettyImages

These days, toxins and chemicals are hard to avoid. From food to cleaning products, nearly everything contains toxic additives, including nearly every common beauty product. Everything from mascara to shampoo to eye cream is loaded with chemicals that are used as preservatives, fragrances, dyes, and more. While these may seem like necessary ingredients in popular products, the side effects should make you think twice.

Our skin absorbs up to 60% of what we put on it, while lip and eye products can get into our system even more directly.

Unfortunately there is very little regulation on what goes into these products. In fact, the US hasn ’t change the laws surrounding personal care regulation since 1938. Most beauty products contain parabens and phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, which means they mess with your hormones and cause all kinds of symptoms and illnesses. Revamping your entire beauty routine may sounds overwhelming and expensive- don ’t worry. There are lots of simple steps you can take to detox your makeup counter and shine with natural beauty. To start, here are common toxic ingredients to look out for, great non-toxic brands to try, and a great tip on how to go natural without blowing your budget.

What to look out for?

Many brands market their products as “natural,” “fresh,” and “organic” despite containing many toxins and chemicals. Instead, check out the ingredient list and look for short lists that contain recognizable, natural ingredients like shea butter, plant oils, and herbs.

Avoid long lists of hard-to-pronounce chemicals like formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulfate, and benzoyl peroxide. These substances are known carcinogens, which means they can cause cancer and tumors. Many are also endocrine disruptors, which means they affect your hormone function. Disrupted hormones are linked with early onset puberty, infertility, and other problems.

What brands should I choose?

The best bet is to opt for companies that are transparent about their ingredients and manufacturing practices. You can find this information on brand websites. You can check out my favorite brands of makeup, sunscreen, hair products and more in the beauty section of my website. You can also get natural products at Whole Foods, select make up stores, and through easy online ordering.

How can I afford this?

It may sound expensive to buy all new, specialty beauty products, but it ’s not as hard as you might think. Many brands are very affordable, plus worth loads in their benefit to your health. Another way to save money is to supplement your beauty routines with homemade masks, scrubs and soaps. Nourishing foods like avocado, coconut oil, and honey as well as exfoliating sugar and salt can be used to create at home beauty remedies. Under $1 worth of food can greatly benefit the health of your hair, nails and skin. Natural treatments can also reduce your need for products like foundation and deep cleansers.

It ’s also great to support non-toxic brands because with more demand and consciousness, the more accessible these products will become. Choosing not to purchase toxic products and spreading the word will contribute to making companies more accountable for the quality and safety of their products.

The Right Way To Restore Your Damaged Hair

The road to healthy hair is paved with products, potions, protein, and deep conditioners... oh my! If your hair is fried or suffers from split ends, sun damage, tangles, and broken brittle pieces, it's time to take charge of your hair's health. It's easy to forget that our hair can be very fragile. Exposure to the sun, hair dryers, flat irons, and even daily brushing can take it's toll and leave you wishing for a time machine.

It's important to remember that repairing damaged hair won't happen over night, but over time developing these habits will aim you down the road to recovery.

Step One: De-Gunk Your Tresses

The products we use and even the water we use to remove the products we use, can cause your hair to have a less-than-healthy sheen. Build up is a serious issue with hair and can cause it to be limp, lifeless, and even cause your ends to be split and feel brittle. Getting this built up gunk off your hair is the first step in repairing damage and having healthier hair. A good clarifying shampoo, a baking soda clarifying treatment, or an apple cider vinegar rinse are great options for removing product build-up, hard water deposits, and mineral build-up on your hair.

How often you need to remove build up really depends on the products you use and the water coming out of your tap. Most people could use a clarifying treatment at least once a month.

Step Two: Protect Your Hair from Sun Exposure

One of the biggest culprits of hair damage, color fade, and brittle ends is sun damage. If you're not protecting your hair from the sun's UV rays, the time to start is now. Even though we are more exposed in the summer, don't forget that the sun shines all year long. These tips offer a great start to protecting your hair from the sun. After a long day of sun exposure (trips to the beach, hiking, outdoor sporting activities) it's a good idea to give your hair a nice long hydrating treatment to keep damage at bay and help your hair stay in tip-top condition.

Step Three: Try a Hot Oil Treatment

I am a huge fan of hot oil treatments to infuse hair with shine and moisture. Hot oil treatments are simple to do right at home. Apply your favorite hair oil generously to clean, towel dried hair. Some of my favorites are CHI's Silk Infusion or Moroccan Oil Treatment. You can also raid the kitchen and try olive oil or lemongrass oil. Cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap and apply heat using a hot towel (fresh from the dryer), your hair dryer, or sit in the sun on a warm day.

After heating the oil, allow your hair to cool at room temperature, and rinse with cool water. Hot oil treatments can be done one to three times per month depending on the amount of damage and how dry your hair is. Too much oil can cause your hair to appear greasy, so be careful not to over-do it.

Step Four: Get a Good Deep Conditioning Treatment

A weekly deep conditioning treatment is a must for repairing your hair's damage and preventing future breakage and havoc. Not all deep conditioners are the same. It's important to find a deep conditioner that works with your hair type, won't weigh your hair down, or cause your hair to feel greasy. A deep conditioner is especially important if you color your hair. Damaged hair will fade faster than healthy hair.

If possible, work with your hair stylist to find the right deep conditioning treatment for your hair type. These are some of my favorites:

CHI Royal Treatment Intense Moisture ConditionerPureOlogy Hydrate HydraCure Hair MasqueGarnier Fructis Fortifying Deep ConditionerNeutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask

Step Five: Get a Haircut

Let's face it, if your tresses are damaged, your ends are breaking, brittle and splitting, and you feel like you're losing at good hair days, a haircut (or just getting regular haircuts) will save the day. You don't have to chop it all off, although bobs and pixie haircuts can undo all your damage without having to buy all the products and put in all time it's going to take to reverse damage to your hair.

Plus, find out why anyone can wear short hair (really). If you're not bold enough to chop it off, at the very least get a healthy trim, try layers, reinvent your face framing, or give a nod to some trendy bangs. This will remove some of the damage and make the repair process a little easier

FIVE Reasons You Should Not Promote Your Gold Jewelry

There are so many reasons to sell or not sell your gold jewelry, but these are some common factors to consider before you make a decision either way.

spxChrome/E+/Getty Images
1.  Gold Prices

The gold market can be as volatile as the stock market. Depending on which side of the scale you're on, you could think that current gold prices are either very over or very undervalued. Some argue that a fair market gold price is $825 per ounce, whereas some think that gold prices in the $1,100 range are low compared to the surge of nearly $2,000 per ounce gold prices in 2011. Some predict gold will surge back up to near $2,000 per ounce whereas others are predicting gold prices will drop down as low as $350 per ounce. Depending on whether you think the current gold prices are high or low might play in to whether or not you sell your gold jewelry.  Sell when high, keep when low!

2.  Vintage Value

Your gold jewelry might have some value beyond its gold value, and this could play into whether or not you sell your jewelry. Modern or lightly used gold jewelry is usually bought at scrap value, but a quality piece of vintage jewelry might fetch a higher price from a dealer. However, if you are looking at a precious piece of jewelry from your grandmother, the item may be priceless and no amount of money offered to you would convince you to sell it.  More »

3.  Hard Times Financially

If you're struggling to pay your bills, it may be a great time for you to sell your gold jewelry. If you think you may have seller's remorse, a pawn shop is a good option for a temporary loan. Once you get back on your feet financially, you can pay off the loan and reclaim your jewelry.

4.  Changing Style

Changing style is a valid reason for selling gold jewelry, but before you decide to sell based on this reason, evaluate points 1 and 2. If gold prices are at an all-time high or your piece is vintage, you may recoup a decent portion of your investment. If gold prices are low and your piece has no vintage value, you might decide that the small amount of money you will get selling it won't be enough to justify selling that necklace your husband got you for your anniversary.

5.  Bad Karma

If you own a piece of jewelry that has some evil voodoo attached to it, whether from a divorce or an old flame, you may decide you want to sell it, no matter how little you are offered for it. Sometimes the association is so toxic, you would nearly give the jewelry away just to get it off your hands. While this can be very cathartic, I would still advise waiting until the gold market yields you the highest return if you can bear to leave it in your jewelry box a little while longer.

Find Out How To Holiday in a couple of Heels

How to break in high heels.  pursuitofshoes.com

It's safe to say most of us have a love/hate relationships with high heels. We love how they look but hate how uncomfortable they can be. One thing most women forget to do when they buy a pair of heels is break them in. Follow my 5 easy steps and they'll be no painful blisters or achy toes:

Stretch them out... even if you have narrow feet your shoes still need to stretch. Put on a pair of cotton socks (not too thin and not too thick) and slip on your heels. Walk around the house for about 30 minutes a few nights in a row and they should be stretched to perfection.
Slippery little suckers... I've been that girl that puts on a new pair of heels for a night out on the town and because they were brand new the soles hadn't been roughed up yet, and I slipped. And let me tell you, this has happened more than once. To prevent this disastrous embarrassment, I rough the soles with some sand paper or buy non-slick pads that stick to the sole. They're life savers - literally! We've all suffered from blisters and they are not fun! Moleskin will be your new best friend. It's a thick, strong cotton fabric that has adhesive on one side to stick to your skin or shoes in the areas that give you blisters. So instead of your shoe rubbing up against your skin causing a blister, you now have a cushion of soft fabric. Blister problemo solved. Make sure to put on BEFORE you start wearing, not after you feel the blister forming. The goal is to prevent! Maybe it's because I'm getting older but comfort is always of the utmost importance. Heels are usually not the most comfortable shoe choice so I have invested in gel soles. They cushion your feet while you're walking and create a much more comfortable experience while romping around. Trust me, you'll love them.
Buy the right shoe size girls! I know, I've totally done the, "They don't have my size but I desperately want them so I'll buy the size they do have and make them work." Nope, it doesn't work, ever. Buying the wrong size either too small or too big causes too many blisters and is hard on your feet. Don't do it - it may be tempting but your feet need to keep you up for the rest of your lives so treat them well.

Enjoy these 5 tips on breaking in your heels and cheers to banning high heel pain!

The Most Productive Short Haircuts by way of Face Shape

So you want a short haircut. Or you want a better one. Or maybe you just want to know what short hairstyles will flatter your face shape.

You've come to the right place. In this slideshow, I run down the top short hairstyle trends of the moment, including cuts like the pixie, the bob (pictured here on actress Jennifer Lawrence), the shag, the pompadour and the edgy cuts that we're seeing all over the place, and I tell you which ones work best with your face shape.

Short Hairstyle Trends

The hottest short hairstyles of the moment are edgier and more modern than in years past. I'm seeing a lot of the following:

Long bangs with shorter sides on the pixieMussy "I just got out of bed and my hair is fabulous" shagsPompadours (razor short sides and long tops)Unstructured bobsLong bobs, worn wavy or straight

Don't miss my article on The Top 6 Short Hairstyle Trends of the Moment.

Why Your Face Shape Matters

Whether you have a round, a long, an oval, a square or a heart-shaped face, there will be styles that look great on you and others that simply aren't as flattering. The good news is that almost every trend will work with every face shape, you just have to get the right cut. For example, the pixie typically doesn't flatter a round face, but if you can elongate the face by wearing short bangs sticking up or grown down in a side-sweep, then the pixie can be gorgeous on your face shape.

Before we get started, you should have some idea of your face shape. Start with my article, How to Measure Your Face to Determine Your Face Shape.

And Your Hair Texture Matters, Too

Your hair texture plays a starring role in the drama that can be choosing a flattering haircut. Your hair's density and texture may dictate your hairstyle, your hair length and how your stylist cuts your hair.

Curly hair won't work with all short hairstyles, but neither will super fine, flat hair. We'll touch on hair texture in this gallery. In the meantime, don't miss 10 Things Every Woman Should Know About Hair Texture

Don't Forget Your Personality

When it comes to short cuts in particular, your personality plays a huge role. Think about what goes through your mind when you see a woman with a structured bob or an edgy haircut. You are probably passing some sort of judgement on her, whether you like it or not. I automatically think a woman with a great edgy cut must be cool. And a woman with a structured bob is sophisticated (at least in my mind).

Consider also that short hair tends draw more attention than long hair. If you're going to get a platinum pompadour, people are going to notice.

Now, onto the fun. Let's get started with the pixie....

Pixie haircuts have been popular for awhile, but the pixie of the moment tends to be longer on top, allowing you to style your hair in a myriad of ways.

While it may seem with super short hair that you're stuck with a monotone look, that isn't the case with the pixie -- as long as you keep hair longer on top. Sweep hair to the side, as Anne Hathaway does here, create a deep side part, part hair in the middle, sweep hair back in a pompadour or curl hair around a small barrel curling iron for a bit of wave.

For examples, don't miss my gallery of the Best Pixies of the Year.

The Best Face Shapes for the Pixie

While almost all pixie hairstyles look great on oval, square and heart-shaped faces, this particular style looks great on round face shape because it visually provides angles, softening the roundness of a round face.

"All those little pieces help emphasize the cheekbones and eyes; it's almost as if you build in cheekbones with this cut," says stylist Jimmy Paul in Allure Magazine.

What about a long face? The cut can make a long face look even more oblong, so I would avoid this particular pixie.

What About Hair Texture?

This particular look works best on petite women with wavy or straight hair. If you have curly hair, you can still wear your hair short, but it won't look like this without massive help.

So many celebrities are cutting off their long locks for the shaggy long bob that I've created a photo gallery of them. And there could not be a better case for chopping off your locks than Julianne Hough, who cut her hair off last year and hasn't looked back.

The secret to the shaggy long bob is in the choppy ends. Think imperfection. Bedhead. Air-dried and finger-curled fabulousness.

Don't miss my gallery of 19 amazing shag haircuts for more examples.

What Face Shapes Does The Shaggy Long Bob Work On?

The shaggy long bob works on all face shapes. I have a long face and my shaggy long bob is the ideal cut for me because it's not too long and not too short and when it's wavy, it adds body to the sides of my face, making it appear to be wider than it actually is.

It's all about softening the edges when you have a square face. This wavy shag works beautifully with a square face shape. If you have waves, let them go (most people have some natural wave in their hair, simply scrunch hair as it dries naturally).

How to Get This Look

Ask your stylist for a soft, tapered bob that hits right at the chin. Then when styling, make sure to scrunch hair so you have some natural wave in it. Try not to wear hair back behind ears.

Add texture to hair with a dry shampoo spray, then flatiron the ends.

If you have an oval face, you can wear virtually any hairstyle, including short hairstyles. A funky cut is perfect on oval faces. A woman who sports a haircut (and tats, too) like this one is asking for attention, which is not only daring, but sexy. A good stylist will take into consideration the shape of your head when cutting an edgy cut. Just as we all have different face shapes, we have different head shapes.

See How to tell if you have an oval face.

See more photos of edgy haircuts.

Bobs are great with all face shapes. You just have to watch what type you get. This particular cut looks great on oval, heart and long face shapes.

The 20 Hottest Bobs.

If you have a square face, show off your strong jaw with a bob that hits you at the jawbone, like this cut on Keira Knightley. Make sure to ask your stylist for a "graduated bob" which is shorter in back and angles longer towards the front.

"A bob works with, not against, bone structure," salon owner Rodney Cutler said on MSN's Glo Website.

The length at the front should be longer than your jaw, otherwise the cut would bring too much attention to your strong jawline.

See more amazing bobs for inspiration in my gallery of The 20 Hottest Bob Hairstyles.

Pixie hairstyles are super flattering on a heart-shaped face and even a round face (Ginnifer Goodwin, pictured here, has a round face). Pixie hair is becoming more and more popular as more celebrities get their hair cut into this boyish-yet-still-feminine-style.

“The softness of a sweeping side bang and the wispy hair in front of the ear work together to frame the eyes,” says stylist Rodney Cutler in Glamour magazine.

The pixie may seem like a wash-and-go type of haircut, and it is. However, you will need trims every five to six weeks. This cut is also best for women without kinky, curly hair, says Cutler.

Mussy, imprecise long bobs are very trendy at the moment. I love this version of the bob on Nicole Richie (I even like her pastel hair color, also a huge trend of the moment). Her hair is cut just an inch or two below the chin and then worn in a shaggy style.

Long bobs work on all hair textures and with all face shapes. So this is a great option for pretty much everyone and is a perfect short cut for women with round faces.

Just make sure if your face is round that you wear your hair at least a couple inches longer than the chin.

Model Jourdan Dunn recently cut her trademark long hair into a long bob, pictured here. The length is perfect for a heart-shaped face. If it stopped at her chin, it would have called out how pointy it is.

The Long Bob Trend is Here to Stay

You want to create angles to offset the roundness of your face. This cut on Cameron Diaz, who has a naturally round face, is gorgeous. The side-swept bangs add the perfect amount of angles to her look. Blowdry or flat iron hair to get any curl out, which adds width to a short haircut (you don't want that).

20 Photos of Gorgeous Side-Swept BangsThe Best Short Hairstyles for Round Face Shapes

The long bob is a great cut for any face shape, but I love it on a long face because it cuts in at a great angle on the face showing off bone structure. The long, side-swept bangs cover a large forehead. Just a gorgeous cut and one I chose for myself (I have a long face). I got a ton of compliments and it grew out beautifully.

This is also a great haircut on a heart-shaped face.

Don't ask me about the two-toned hair color.

I think it looks kinda cool.

See How to tell if you have a long face or a heart-shaped face.

See a photo gallery of long bob hairstyles.

Long bobs are a gorgeous, safe bet when it comes to short hair and a round face. The length helps make a round face appear thinner.

See The Best Short Hairstyles for Round Face Shapes.

The long bob is universally flattering on all face shapes. The cut gives a round face angles and structure, which balance out soft lines. The length (2 inches or more below the chin) is the key to this cut. You can get long layers cut in to add texture and cutting hair at an angle along the line of the jaw makes this cut less boring and more modern.

If you have a square face, try parting hair in the center.

For long faces, part hair at the side.

Curl hair for more width if you have a long face, straighten hair if you have a round face.

Just because you're over 50 doesn't mean you have to cut your hair, but this haircut (which isn't really short, but rather sort of medium-length) is very flattering on oval and long face shapes. The body adds width and the length is universally flattering. (Don't let your hairstylist remove too much bulk from shoulder-length hair if you have long hair, you'll be left with limp, stringy, flat hair).

If you have a long face, you should consider adding waves to your hairstyle, no matter its length.

The woman with this haircut actually has straight hair cut into a classic, angled bob, which is a great cut for women with long faces. What I love about this style is she curled her hair, which adds width to an otherwise thin face.

If you have a high forehead, try long, side-swept bangs (you'll see an example in this gallery) and if you have natural waves, let them go.

Stay away from extremely long or short cuts. These elongate your face.

See How to tell if you have a long face.

Women with long faces tend to look great in bobs. See a photo gallery of bob hairstyles.

Oval faces can be on the long side. If you have a long face, or an oval face that is long-ish, consider a sophisticated bob such as this one. The angles show off a strong jaw and the long layers add some movement to the bob isn't too boxy or helmet-like. Long bangs will mask a high forehead. Ask for layers cut in at the eyes and cheeks.

Many women with long face shapes have a high forehead. Cover up your large forehead with blunt or side-swept bangs like these.

This is another haircut that would look great on all face shapes, but it amazing on Karlie Kloss's heart-shaped face.

See See 19 amazing shag haircuts.

Cameron Diaz is proof rules are meant to be broken. Usually bobs don't look good on round face shapes, but this particular bob looks fantastic on Cameron Diaz, who has a natural round face. Why? Her side-swept bangs add angles to her hairstyle and her hair is very straight so it doesn't add width to the sides of her head.

Note the absolutely gorgeous blonde hair color she has here. Trust me, it's not natural.

But going short isn't for the faint of heart. Diaz revealed in early 2012 on the Jay Leno Show that she wasn't very happy with her short bob when she first got it. Turns out it was much shorter than she expected. "I just burst into tears and started crying, and I felt so vulnerable," Diaz told Leno. Apparently, Diaz was so upset, she yelled, which made her stylist cry. "I ended up writing her a few emails after, the next couple days, assuring her I wasn't going to kill her," Diaz said.

Notice how Tabatha Coffey's face is much longer than it is wider, yet her hairstyle is very flattering and stylish. This is a great cut for a woman with naturally pin-straight hair and a long face.

The style might also work on women with thick, slightly wavy hair.

I love this cut on Evan Rachel Wood who has a naturally square face shape. This cut would also work well on someone with a long face. If you have a round face and covet this hairstyle, you're also in luck, it would work on your face shape, too.

Avoid this cut if you have a heart-shaped face. The long bang hits right at the chin, which would highlight yours, typically something you want to avoid if you have a pointy chin like many women with heart-shaped faces.

J'adore!

Find out why this particular haircut works on a round face in my slideshow, The Best Short Hairstyles for Round Face Shapes.

I just love this hairstyle on Camren Bicondova, which is another example of a typical no-no: I usually advise women with curly hair not to wear their hair short. But here, I'm proven wrong.

Just another reason to ignore beauty rules when selecting a hairstyle for yourself. I have heard so many stories of women going to their hairstylists with a request to cut their hair into a pixie or an edgy cut, for example, and the hairstylist refuses because the "rules" say a pixie won't work with a round face or the edgy cut won't fall correctly with the woman's hair texture.

And then the woman goes somewhere else and gets the cut and BAM! She looks amazing.

Here's to breaking the rules.

16 Beauty Rules Worth Breaking

Does Your Face Shape Really Matter?

Sometimes rules are meant to be broken and this is an example of one. Typically I advise women with round faces to stay away from the classic bob that hits right at chin. It can make a round face appear rounder. I have been known to recommend wearing bobs longer than the chin only. But here, Jennifer Lawrence shows off a bob that falls at the chin and looks absolutely gorgeous on her round face.

So what gives?

Well, there are a few things to consider here:

In the first picture Lawrence wears her hair parted in middle so it falls like a curtain hiding the roundness of her face. You typically want to avoid jaw-length bobs if you have a round face, especially if you were also blessed with a short neck. Any blunt cut at the chin will accentuate roundness.  Note that Lawrence's cut here falls a couple inches below her chin (if blow-dried straight). The waves deflect the roundness of her face.

What I love about this hairstyle on Judi Dench is it's edgy and cool and could suit a woman at age 15, 25, 40, 65 or 85. It works great on all face shapes, except long faces because the volume up top would make a long face appear longer. That said, I'm all for breaking rules so ignore me please if you have a long face and covet this hairstyle.

If you are thinking of going short and like this cut, you're in luck because it would work well on anyone.

But before you cut off all your hair, keep in mind that short hair has to be trimmed every 4-6 weeks if you want to maintain your style.
