Aug 10 2015 - If you are anyone that wants to get an all-in-one system for graphics or video work, then the Apple iMac with 5K Retina Display is unrivaled in the marketplace. The display is just incredible especially given the price of the system. Overall performance is great and the system is as stylish and well-built as ever. It still has the minor flaws of the hard to access peripheral ports and no optical drive but for many those are small sacrifices.

The 27-inch model is considered their top of the line system offering a large screen in a very svelte profile that features a very luxurious aluminum clad exterior. Few systems can match it in terms of the production quality and design. Not to rest on that design alone though, Apple continues to innovate and this time it is in the display for the 5K Retina Display model that has been on the market for over a year.
Performance wise Apple has always done well thanks to their use of desktop class processors rather than relying on laptop class parts. For the entry level iMac with 5K Retina Display, Apple uses a Core i5 quad core processor. While this is not a Core i7 with its Hyper-Threading, it does provide it with solid performance that outperforms and of the Core i7 laptop class all-in-one's on the market. This is especially true for those demanding tasks like desktop video editing which is something many looking to use this system will probably be interesting in doing. The system comes with a standard 8GB of DDR3 memory but this is something that can be upgraded by the user unlike many of the other internals.
Storage for the system is pretty average when it comes to capacity. It uses a one terabyte hard drive that provides a decent amount of storage. It would be nice to see two terabytes like some of the competition but at least the system does use a 7200rpm desktop class drive that provides it with some decent performance. Those looking for even higher performance can always order one directly from Apple with the Fusion drive that adds a solid state drive for caching or a straight SSD version. One thing that is missing on pretty much every Apple system now is a DVD drive. This means that system cannot be used as a media center for playing or recording CD or DVD media. This requires an external drive. In terms of adding on storage, there are four USB 3.0 ports and two Thunderbolt 2 ports for use with high speed external storage. One downside here is that all the ports are on the back of the display which helps minimize cable clutter but makes it more difficult to access them.
Apple's 27-inch iMac's have always had impressive screens but the 5K Retina Display is just something that has to be seen to be believed. It features an incredible 5120x2880 native resolution that has four times the pixels of a 2560x1440 display used in the previous 27-inch and is even higher than 4K displays. It offers amazing color and brightness that rival any other 27-inch all-in-one on the market. In fact, if you want a similar display for a standard desktop you have to look at the Dell UltraSharp UP2715K display which costs more than the entire iMac. Unlike Windows based systems, Mac OS X does a great job of scaling text which means that things don't shrink to an unusable font size. The graphics for the system are handled by an AMD Radeon R9 M290 graphics processor to help accelerate various tasks. Be warned that this is not a super high end graphics processor so gaming at the maximum resolution is not something you would even consider. Instead it has to run at scaled down resolutions such as 2560x1440.
Pricing is almost unimaginable for the Apple iMac with 5K Retina Display. The $2000 starting price is less expensive than the similar stand alone 5K display by Dell that was already mentioned. There is essentially no comparable Windows based all-in-one on the market. About the only ones that could be considered even close are the ASUS ET2702IGHTH or the Dell XPS 27. Both have 27-inch displays with WQHD skills and use faster Core i7 desktop processors that provide faster overall speeds. Their displays don't even come close but Dell does feature a touchscreen for those wanting that feature. Both of the Windows systems offer a DVD drive that is missing from the Apple. ASUS's solution is several hundred dollars less while the Dell XPS is nearly identical in price.
